Trump ’stands a good chance’

Nate Silver, of the FiveThirtyEight blog, says Clinton appears to be on course to win the popular vote by 3% to 4%, in line with national opinion polls.

But - he adds - she is predicted to win only 290 Electoral College votes, a narrow margin of victory, which means Donald Trump has a decent shot of winning the presidency. That might be because Clinton’s support is not concentrated in swing states, he suggests.

Silver famously predicted the correct result in all 50 states in 2012.

Some commentators had suggested tonight could be over relatively early if Hillary Clinton won a key state like Florida.

But with Trump slightly ahead and other important states like Georgia yet to be called, it looks like we might not have a winner any time soon.

As early returns show Hillary Clinton trailing Donald Trump in key states, the Wall Street journal reports that Senator Chuck Schumer has been trying to keep spirits up among her supporters.
